Our Academic Programs
Toddler
2 years - 3 years
Our loving and language rich toddler community will meet the needs of growing toddlers.

At The Montessori School, your toddler will be given opportunities to develop basic motor coordination, independence, and language skills.

Our trained and caring Montessori teachers will be able to adjust to your toddler’s needs as they experience their first contact with other children and learn to participate in a cooperative group.
Preschool
3 years - 6 years
The Montessori preschool classroom flourishes under the guidance of a Montessori teacher in a “prepared environment.”

Activities in the preschool classroom include early language and number work, “practical life” (cooking, manners, personal care…), introduction to cultures and geography, art and music activities, Spanish, botany, and zoology.

A Montessori preschool education develops a creative, caring, confident child who loves to learn.

Montessori Philosophy
All parents hope to find the best educational program for their children. And they recognize the lasting impact that early learning experiences have on a child’s development and future learning. What is it about the Montessori philosophy and practice that is so appealing to parents?
A Montessori education develops students who are capable, accountable, knowledgeable people who have the strong sense of self they will need to thrive in the real world.
"Free the child's potential, and you will transform him into the world."
A Montessori classroom is thoughtfully designed to offer children opportunities to develop their own capabilities, whether it is learning how to dress themselves independently, multiply a multi-digit equation, communicate their needs effectively, or problem solve with others. Each classroom is filled with developmentally appropriate activities that encourage children to interact with specific learning materials, as well as to work cooperatively with others.
In a child-centered classroom where learning activities are presented individually to children, students progress at their own pace. They are given opportunities to practice, review, or move forward based on their own interests and capabilities. They take charge of their own learning and become accountable for their own knowledge.
The Montessori Method nurtures order, coordination, concentration, and independence in children from the moment they enter the classroom. Classroom design, materials, and daily routines support the student’s emerging self-regulation—the ability to educate oneself, and to think about what one is learning—from toddlers through adolescents. The sequence of Montessori lessons aligns well, and in many cases exceeds, state learning standards, ensuring that children are introduced to complex learning concepts through hands-on experiences that leads to deep understanding.
A Montessori class is composed of students whose ages typically span 3 years. Ideally, students stay with the class, and teacher, for the entire cycle, forging a stable community and meaningful bonds.
It is common to see students of different ages working together. Older students enjoy mentoring their younger classmates—sometimes the best teacher is someone who has recently mastered the task at hand. Younger students look up to their big “brothers” and “sisters,” and get a preview of the alluring work to come.

Curriculum
Our classrooms are filled with inviting, hands-on activities that are thoughtfully organized into different sections of the room based on the primary areas of our curriculum: language, math, sensorial development, practical life, and cultural awareness. We expose children to a range of intellectual, physical and social activities, and we give them long blocks of uninterrupted time to work in these activities. In this way children take responsibility for their own learning. They learn to ask questions and to seek explanations and then to ask more questions. They learn to make decisions, to challenge themselves, and to strategize.

Our students work with the classic Montessori Math materials, which have a range of uses depending on the child’s level of development. By exploring these materials hands-on, children gain a concrete understanding of everything from number identification to addition and subtraction to multiplication and division.

Sensorial materials give children an opportunity to develop an understanding of their physical environment by using their senses. These concrete materials convey such qualities as color, shape, texture, and weight, and in working with them children come to grasp such concepts as one-to-one correspondence, ordering, and classification.

Art is a part of everyday life at WSMS. In addition to their semi-monthly visit from our art specialist, our students are encouraged to explore the many art materials available at all times in the classroom: tempera paints, watercolors, pencils, crayons, chalk, found materials from walks in the park.

INFLUENTIAL MONTESSORI ALUMNI
By Amazing Stars Montessori
For over a century, the Montessori model has equipped children with a distinct academic advantage and has been a fundamental part in helping those reach their fullest potential. Montessori alumni are confident, self-empowered individuals with a lifelong love for learning. It’s of no surprise that the following well-known individuals were all Montessori educated and attribute much of their success to their Montessori roots.
Montessori gave me alot of confidence at a young age.
Stephen Curry, 4x NBA Champion, 2x NBA MVP
Stephen Curry and his siblings, Seth and Sydel, attended a Montessori school from a young age. Stephen Curry attributes a great deal of his success to the foundation that Montessori education gave him. “Montessori gave me a lot of confidence at a young age.” Steph states in a video by the American Montessori Society. “I harnessed my strengths and worked on my weaknesses as I went through school and for any kid to experience that at some point, allows them the sense of confidence that they can achieve anything.” Sonya and Dell Curry (Stephen’s parents) were so touched by the Montessori method that they opened their own Montessori school, Christian Montessori School of Lake Norman, in August 1995.
